Friends creator David Crane has revealed why Joey and Phoebe never became an item.

The characters, played by Matt Le Blanc, 52, and Lisa Kudrow, 56, had several romantic moments, including when Joey proposed.

But according to Crane, 62, who co-wrote the show with Marta Kauffman, 63, the pair were never meant to be a couple because it would have been 'too tidy and complete' and the creators 'felt it would be a mistake'.ADVERTISEMENTADVERTISEMENT

Other romances in the long-running American sitcom saw Ross and Rachel, played by David Schwimmer and Jennifer Aniston, and Monica and Chandler, played by Courtney Cox and Matthew Perry, end up together.

But Crane explained to Metro.co.uk why Phoebe and Joey did not follow suit.

The writer, who is in London to promote Comedy Central's FriendsFestive event, divulged: 'It all would have been too tidy and too complete...

'When your goal is to keep the six characters in stories together, it would be really easy to go down that road but I think we all felt it would be a mistake'.

Phoebe and Joey kissed several times throughout the show's 10 seasons, including sharing a 'perfect' smooch in one episode.

Later in the show, which ran until 2004, when Joey thought Phoebe was pregnant, he even proposed to his love interest - although nothing materialised from it.

Even though Phoebe and Joey only had a few romantic encounters, Monica and Chandler ended up marrying and having children together.

And Ross and Rachel's on-off relationship ran across the ten seasons, with the couple ending up permanently together in the final episode of season 10.

The news about Phoebe and Joey comes after it was recently revealed that Monica and Chandler were not supposed to be a couple.

However, they ended up getting together because fans demanded it, forcing the writers to create the romance.

According to Generation Friends: An Inside Look At The Show That Defined A Television Era, by Saul Austerlitz, the idea of hook up between control freak Monica and super sarcastic Chandler 'began as a whim.'ADVERTISEMENT

'When the second season was being planned, one of the writers tossed out an idea: "What if we get Chandler and Monica together? ' he writes.

'The thought was intended less as a permanent shift in the gravity of the series and more as a fun plot line, good for a few episodes before the status quo snapped back into place.'

One writer called the idea 'a little desperate,' and it wasnt brought back up until the staff started working on season 4 when someone suggested it as a funny end to Monicas drunken night of self-doubt after the wedding of brother Ross, played by David Schwimmer, to Emily in London.

Major stars: The enormously popular American sitcom ran from 1994 until 2004
