Anonymous Interview Answer

"I am looking to apply my experience and skills to an industry devoted to improving people's lives and one that will bring new challenges to me professionally."

Rachelle's Feedback for the Answer Above

Transitioning to an industry that you find more value in is an understandable reason to move on. Well said!

"My previous company was a food company and I am now looking for a pure tech company. In particular, I like that you are an analytics company and I feel like my analytical side can be better utilized at your company. Also, the project at my previous company was more or less done."

Amanda's Feedback for the Answer Above

This is a good start. Consider starting your answer by more directly answering the question and then following up with what excites you about working for this particular company. You can share that the project you were working on in your previous role has been completed and you're ready to take on your next challenge in the tech space so that you can put your analytical skills to work solving a new problem.

"Eventually, I would like to work with just patients going into delivery and not postpartum if I'm being honest."

Amanda's Feedback for the Answer Above

I appreciate how directly you answered the question, but this question typically requires a bit more finesse. Narrowing your focus too much can make you appear inflexible or unwilling to adapt if needs change. Consider adjusting your answer to share what you've learned in your current role and that you're looking for the next step that will empower you to best use the skills you've honed to focus on labor patients because your experience has shown you that this is where your passion lies.

Well done! This is a very clear, considerate response.

"The opportunity presents itself and it is the career path I've always wanted for myself."

Stephanie's Feedback for the Answer Above

This is a great start, but I suggest developing this response a bit more. Why is now the right time? Example: "I have grown so much in my current role and it has been a meaningful experience, but I am excited to grow in my career and this is the perfect time for a change."

"My last job ended in redundancies. There was a restructure in the business due to covid. There weren't enough hours for me, therefore leaving was the best thing. I knew I would find another job with my experience."

Stephanie's Feedback for the Answer Above

COVID certainly impacted employment for a lot of people! My only suggestion for strengthening this response is to add a growth-focused closing sentence or two to "pitch" yourself for this opportunity. For example, "I am eager for a new opportunity and look forward to using all of the skills I've learned in my previous roles to pivot to a new company. "

"I just finished my internship and I'm looking for an opportunity to start my career. I wish I can work in a big company like your company where supports good training and development. I have a strong learning ability and a can-do attitude. I believe I will grow up quickly and make a positive contribution to your company in a short term."

Marcie's Feedback for the Answer Above

This is a good answer! Make sure you don't repeat yourself too much, however (you've previously mentioned your 'strong learning ability and can-do attitude' a few times now). Pick different skills and strengths to highlight in each answer so the interviewer learns more about all the things you have to offer. For instance, you might emphasize your analytical and detail-oriented nature in this answer instead, just to change things up.

"I am looking for a new job because my wife took a new job here which in turns means I get the opportunity to find a new job with a company like yours. I have really enjoyed my last job and the experience I gained there but we are relocating here and are planning on staying."

Chad's Feedback for the Answer Above

Great strategy to present your family's recent relocation as an "opportunity" to find a new job. It is always best to be honest with the interviewer about your motivation, and not to overshare or speak negatively about your current situation. Good job!

"I actually wasn't looking for a new job. When this position became available several people from this company contacted me and told me the position was now open."

Cindy's Feedback for the Answer Above

Great. I would complete what you've started by explaining why you're suited to the position and the company. What led you to apply?

"I love my position, coworkers, and management, but the business model is independent contractors. This means each pharmacist gets paid based on how many comprehensive medication reviews (also called CMRs) that pharmacist complete per month. I have personally set goals to increase my CMRs goal by 25% or more from the prior month, and I succeeded in doing so, but it was not fulfilling enough for me. I usually thrive on the idea of getting promoted and moving up within a company, and that's not something that I can look forward to in my current position. After being there for about a year and a half, I've realized that there is not much room for growth opportunities. Even though I understand that THIS position that I am interviewing is a PRN position, but ideally, I would hope this position would lead to a potential full-time opportunity in the future. Generally speaking, St. Vincent's hospital offers a wide range of areas for advancement and growth that cannot be found in another setting."

Rachelle's Feedback for the Answer Above

You are very clear on your goals, and it's wonderful that you know exactly what drives you and where you want to take your talents next. The way you approach this question is very professional because, although your current position isn't set up in a way that motivates you, you express this with respect and understanding. Good work!

"I am grateful for everything that I have learned in my current position. I am looking for a new job because I have been in my current position for more than three years, and I think it is time for something new. With my education and previous work experience, I think that Four Seasons would be a great fit for the experience and challenge I am looking for."

Rachelle's Feedback for the Answer Above

Because three years doesn't seem too long in most employers' eyes, I would refrain from using this as a baseline. You will want to discuss if you are not able to move up into the next position. I have provided a response below.

"I am grateful for everything that I have learned in my current position. I am looking for a new job because I have been in my role for three years and, despite asking for growth, there is no opportunity for movement at this time. With my education and previous work experience, I think that Four Seasons would be an excellent fit for the experience that I bring and the challenges that I crave."

"In my current role, there is not much growth opportunity. Because when you get a project and task; you pretty much have that task for a quite long time. Meanwhile, in this graduate position, I get the opportunity to grow which fits me well and try out different roles within different departments. I am very thankful for everything my current company has offered me the past year; however, I am ready to expand my horizons."

Rachelle's Feedback for the Answer Above

You did well with showing gratitude when it comes to your current company and what you have learned. It's important to remain positive when speaking about your former employer. Nice work!

"I'm looking for something new and exciting. I left my last role as it was a family business, and they closed while they went under new management. I am excited to learn about the many new skills my old job couldn't offer me."

Rachelle's Feedback for the Answer Above

'New and exciting' can be a red flag to an interviewer because they may wonder if you will leave your job the minute it is no longer exciting. I have offered a revision, below.

"My last role was with a family-owned business, and unfortunately, they closed. I am eager to find a new position with a more established business where I can continue to grow in my career."

Lauren's Feedback for the Answer Above

I assisted in rewording your response slightly. It was a wise choice to convey how many years of experience you have.

Kristine's Feedback for the Answer Above

Good start. Unfortunately, it may not be clear why you are returning to the workforce after retirement. Be honest while being careful not to overshare. For example, if this is the perfect opportunity to draw you out of retirement, you could say that. If you discovered you prefer working and being part of a team instead of retired life, you could say that.
